Yesterday, September 25, 2023, marked eight years since world leaders gathered at the United Nations headquarters in New York to participate in the Sustainable Development Summit and agreed to adopt a set of global goals aimed at solving serious problems such as the eradication of hunger and poverty, the safety of the planet's inhabitants, the generation of prosperity, etc.
To this end, they created what is known as the “Sustainable Development Agenda,” which consists of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that propose specific targets to be developed and met by 2030 and continue the work begun by a previous agenda known as the “Millennium Development Goals” (MDGs).
Unlike the MDGs, the SDGs make it clear that the actions to be taken do not depend solely on governments and institutions, but also call on civil society and individuals in general to do their part each person to do their bit towards sustainability, opening the doors to a new awareness of global citizenship in which, beyond our personal or group beliefs, we are able to become agents of change through ethical and simple actions and solutions which, however small they may seem, are very necessary and can be very significant when multiplied by millions of people all over the world.
The United Nations, committed to these actions for change, considers education to be one of the most powerful vehicles for achieving real, tangible, and necessary changes simultaneously in the short, medium, and long term, and therefore includes it as Goal #4 (SDG4): Quality Education, which is closely correlated with the other 16 goals.
Some of the actions we can take at home are:
Save electricity by unplugging appliances you are not using and turning off lights in empty rooms, televisions, and computers.
Avoid printing non-essential documents (bank and utility statements, invoices, etc.).
Buy products from companies that apply sustainable practices and do not harm the environment.
Take short showers or, preferably, baths.
Dry clothes outdoors instead of using a machine.
Etc.
We can all be part of this change, and may these words serve as an invitation to add these small changes and others to our daily lives.
We are all responsible for the change we want, and at DBB we believe that we are stronger together than apart. Follow us on social media or check out https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/es/takeaction/ to learn about many other actions you can take from anywhere. This is not only simple, but it can also be motivating and very rewarding because it promotes teamwork in the environments that are most important to each of us.
We all need your help, your positive attitude, and your example to move forward and leave a better world behind.
Thank you and see you next time.
Miss Gina, Robert, and the entire DBB family.
